Guest Speaker: Stephen Faul for Second Harvest

Submitted by Darryl Patterson on March 12, 2009 – 7:11 pmNo Comment

Second HarvestStephen Faul is the Executive Director of Second Harvest after having spent many years working and travelling for Operation Eyesight. It always amazes us to find out what people are doing to help other people, and the work that Second Harvest does is surely amazing.

“Every day, Second Harvest picks up excess fresh food that would otherwise go to waste, and delivers it to approximately 250 social service programmes in the Greater Toronto Area.”

That translates to over 7 million pounds of fresh food every year!

Second Harvest has a fleet of seven refrigerated trucks that picks up fresh & near expired unused food every day. The food is delivered to a distribution centre where it’s sorted and shipped out usually within 24hrs. The food is sent to breakfast and lunch programmes, soup kitchens and to their Harvest Kitchens (to name but a few of the 250).

The four Harvest Kitchens train adults and youth with barriers to employment in food preparation, providing valuable job skills needed to help them achieve a self-sufficient future. The prepared meals are then delivered to many agencies throughout the GTA.

Second Harvest is not supported by any level of government or any large charitable organizations (such as The United Way). Support comes entirely from food donations, corporate & personal donations and volunteers. They prepare over 15,000 meals every day for distribution in the GTA. Any all support is appreciated!
